Tom Carty

Russell Bates first carved his place in pop culture by co-creating and naming the character of Derek Zoolander, directing and editing the short film “Derek Zoolander: Male Model” starring Ben Stiller for the VH1 Fashion Awards.

Drawing on a talent for rigorous casting, witty and naturalistic performances, and highly cinematic imagery, Russell creates films that are much loved around the world.

He’s most recently directed campaigns for Volkswagen, Müller, Jura, The Oscars (ABC- TV), Sony, Head & Shoulders, Tide (starring Betty White), Snickers (starring Joan Collins and honored by Cannes Lions and the London International Award), Axe, L’Oreal, and Jimmy Dean.

Russell has also directed comedic shorts for the MTV Movie Awards, Comedy Central, and the People’s Choice Awards.

His featured actors have included Queen Latifah, Danny DeVito, Will Ferrell, Jon Favreau, Neal Patrick Harris, Owen Wilson, Jemaine Clement, Jennifer Tilly, Andy Dick, Jimmy Kimmel, Patton Oswalt, Nathan Fillion, Jim Gaffigan, Lisa Kudrow, Billy Crystal, Denis Leary, Charlie Day, Ioan Gruffudd, Jon Glaser, Wayne Newton, Joe Rogan and N’Sync.

He’s directed the athletes Roger Federer, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Larry Nance Jr., C.J. Wilson, Josh Hamilton, Austin Dillon, David Robinson, Phil Simms, Cris Carter, and Oliver Kahn.

A graduate of UCLA Film School, Russell’s an avid surfer and cyclist, and is a contributing writer for the music blog Sound It Out. He’s also a beekeeper and co- founder of the Backwards Beekeepers, an all-organic educational and advocacy collective. Russell and his wife keep wild bees that they capture themselves, producing the much coveted Feral Honey brand, featured in several LA restaurants and wine bars.

Tom worked for a number of high profile agencies before joining AMV BBDO, where he became one of the leading creatives of his generation, penning iconic work such as the world renowned Guiness campaign: “Bet on Black”, “Swimblack” and the much celebrated “Surfer”. His directing career began when he wrote and directed the stunning “Freedom of Knowledge” Nelson Mandela spot for The Economist. Since then, he’s been tapped to direct outstanding spots for Nike, Jack Daniels, Verizon, NBA and Samsung. Tom is best known for his eye-catching visual style along with strong dialogue-driven performances and his tea making skills are legendary.
